Transform the Way You Teach and Learn Engineering Risk Management

Background Overview

The world is changing at a very fast pace.

There is a lot of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) in engineering education that needs to be studied, examined, and improved in the right away. Higher education can't keep up with changes in technology, the global economy, and the way people live their lives online. Global networking has made the world smaller and more linked, breaking down barriers like language, location, social norms, and ideas. These changes haven't had much of an effect on engineering education. Engineering education requires the graduates to be able to apply the technical knowledge and skills to solve complex real world problems and create innovative solutions for various fields and industries in a collaborative manner.

Empowering Future Engineers

with Real-World Skills

In the complex world of engineering risk management, traditional teaching methods often struggle to keep students engaged or simulate real-world decision-making. Our research explores how GPTs (Generative Pre-trained Transformers) can bring engineering education to life, allowing students to experience real-time decision-making simulations and deepening their understanding through dynamic, interactive learning.

Lectures and textbooks only go so far. To truly prepare students for the challenges of engineering risk management, we need tools that immerse them in real-world decision-making. This project introduces GPT technology into the course assignment, providing an interactive learning environment where students can practice and refine their skills.

How AI affects Education?

The usage of AI such as GPT as a tool for Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) changes the dynamic shift from traditional methods and provide an interactive and authentic learning experience for collaborative online learning.

Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) is a term (supported by Advance HE) that includes and supports a wide variety of learning and delivery options, including blended, online, flexible, flipped, hyflex, dual, multimodal, and in-person (face-to-face, on-campus). TEL can help and educate students for life long learning. By using TEL, every offline or online space can be transformed into an environment that encourages active student engagement and improve the overall learning experience.

Bringing Interactive Learning to Engineering Risk Management

In an industry where the stakes are high, engineering students need to be ready to make critical decisions. This research project was born out of the need for more dynamic and engaging learning tools that prepare students for real-world challenges.

Exploring The Questions

  • Research Question 1

How does the use of GPTs in experiential learning environments compare to traditional methods in terms of student engagement and collaborative learning?

  • Research Question 2

How effective are GPTs in improving students’ comprehension and application of risk management theories through formative assessments?

  • Research Question 3

What are the strengths and limitations of using GPTs for simulating real-world engineering decision-making scenarios?

  • Research Question 4

How do GPTs, as part of technology-enhanced learning, enhance the flexibility and accessibility of experiential learning in engineering risk management?

What We Aim to Achieve?

Bringing Interactive Learning to Engineering Risk Management

  • Explore on how technology especially GPT can facilitate and contribute to long term learning outcomes. The aim is to give students an interactive, real-world experience where they can practice decision-making in engineering risk management.

  • Build , develop and implement specialized custom GPTs that act as virtual project clients or sponsors to simulate real world decision-making. These GPTs are designed using real-world project data such as business cases and project websites.

  • Test and Investigate how GPTs influence student participation and interaction in the learning process. By measuring engagement levels, we aim to understand how effectively GPTs can make learning more immersive and engaging.

  • Assess the role of GPTs in improving students’ understanding and application of risk management concepts. This objective focuses on whether using GPTs helps students better achieve the course’s learning goals, particularly in applying risk management theories to engineering projects.

The Benefits.

What can you gain?

  • GPTs provide interactive, real-time simulations, making learning more immersive and engaging for students compared to traditional lectures or textbooks.

  • By simulating real-world scenarios, GPTs help students apply risk management theories in practice, leading to a deeper understanding of the material and better overall performance.

  • GPTs allow students to experience decision-making in a controlled environment, which closely mirrors real-world engineering challenges, giving them practical skills needed for their careers.

  • Students receive immediate feedback on their decisions through GPTs, which helps them learn from mistakes, adjust their approaches, and improve their understanding of complex concepts.

  • GPT-based learning environments offer flexibility, allowing students to engage with the material at their own pace and revisit simulations as needed, making education more accessible to diverse learning styles.

  • GPTs can simulate group projects or multi-stakeholder environments, encouraging teamwork, collaboration, and peer learning, which enhances the overall educational experience.

  • By using AI-powered tools like GPTs, universities can deliver high-quality, interactive learning experiences without the need for expensive infrastructure, making it a cost-effective solution for both institutions and students.

  • Incorporating GPTs positions the institution as a leader in innovative teaching methods, enhancing its reputation and attracting students who are seeking cutting-edge educational experiences.Incorporating GPTs positions the institution as a leader in innovative teaching methods, enhancing its reputation and attracting students who are seeking cutting-edge educational experiences.
